SECRET GIVING

"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." Matthew 6:1-4

SECRET GIVING
What does secret giving mean to you? I grew up in a home where my mother gave and gave - she taught us that giving to others was at the forefront of who we are. I remember as a child barely having enough food to feed a family of seven, but yet my mom would fill bags of food for a neighbor in need. Her heart was to give unconditionally without judgment. She opened my eyes to see that no matter what little we may have, we can always give something. She personified the "widow's mite" over and over again.

God always provided in our home because my mother sowed generously! "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. ... Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God." 2 Corin. 9:6-11 (emphasis added)

In a world where the emphasize is on getting all you can, having more, getting the best, bigger homes, cars, etc., we are slowly failing into the trap of self-indulgence. When we take our eyes of the needs of others and put them on ourselves we become like the Pharisees. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside will be clean." Matthew 23:25-26

Let's teach our children about what it means to give generously - lead by example! If your child sees you buying everything you want, or passing by the Salvation Army "red kettle" without dropping in at least $1, what do you think you are teaching them? Take the time to teach them about giving to others and searching your heart before purchasing that next new gadget.

Here are some practical ways to teach them about giving to others:

  • Visit a local food pantry and have them volunteer their time;
  • Spend time helping with local ministries that help others, "Feed My Starving Children"
  • Start a giving bank at home and use it to bless a family in need;
  • Bring gifts to someone in need and drop them off at their door (use this as a secret project);
  • Don't pass the "red kettle" without putting something in - every little bit adds up;
  • Buy the person behind you at the Starbuck's drive-through their coffee;

When wanting to buy the next new gadget that comes on the market, start an envelope marked with that item on the front and when they have saved up the entire amount have them ask themselves - "is this something I want or need?" They may still say it is something they need but at least you have planted the seed for them to first search their heart before making the choice. As they begin to consciously think about this they will begin to make wiser choices. Be patient and remember to lead by example.

Nick's official website: http://www.lifewithoutlimbs.org/

This is a young man that let's his light shine for Jesus (no matter the circumstance)! Truly inspirational.

Remember God looks at the heart for it is the attitude of the heart that dictates how we will respond to life's challeges. It will become a defining moment (see article below) for us - how will you respond!

"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting." Psalm 139:23-24

"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." Psalm 51:10

"I the LORD, search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve." Jeremiah 17:10

"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God" Colossians 3:1

DEFINING MOMENTS

Defining Moments
"When Choices Matter Most"
A book by Dan Schaeffer

Just received this book in the mail about a month ago and instantly felt it was going to me a must read! I was certainly not disappointed - it has been awesome!

The first page will grab you, "Defining moments! One morning you wake up, totally unaware that today you will make a decision that will define your life for years to come, perhaps forever. ... Such moments will cast us in either a positive or negative light. We can be defined as much by noble actions and words as by tragic ones."

The author continues to say, "That moment is coming - maybe today, pershaps in a week, a month or a year, but it is coming, and you won't be able to escape it. Right now you are cultivating habits and thoughts that will lead you inexorably to that moment."

The book takes you through many people in the bible who weren't ready for their moment and the tragic consequences to their choices. You also meet others who were ready and you find out the wise principles they used. The author asks "ARE YOU READY?".

This is a book that you will definitely need a highlighter for so get ready and transform your book from black and white to bright shades of yellow! It will inspire and enlighten you to be ready for that moment.

One of the stories that really spoke to me was that of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego. They refused to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar's gods or worship the golden image. As a result they where thrown into a furnace of blazing fire and came out of it without any damage - they didn't even smell like smoke!

They stayed united in their common convictions and the following three principals where evident:

  1. With others you can face danger with new courage

  2. You will stand your ground with greater conviction

  3. Your faith can be taken to a higher level

We all need a Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego? We need friends who will stand by and support us through those defining moments. Friends that will have the same conviction about their faith as we do. So, are your friends encouraging or discouraging your Christian convictions? Finding a group of friends who have the same convictions and desire to grow in their faith walk is important. This will strengthen your faith, affirm your convictions and help prepare you for any defining moments God might bring into your life.

That is why finding fellowships groups either through bible study, small groups, ministry work, etc. are so important for Christians. Surround yourself with friends that will make healthy deposits instead of withdrawals. Don't abandon your non-Christian friends, but don't allow them to drag you down either. Seek out encouragers, and most of all be an encourager! Hebrews 3:13 "But encourage one another daily, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness."

My Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you Father for your Word that is sharper than any double-edged sword that judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Search my heart and do the work that is required to prepare me for any defining moments. I want to make the choices that Glorify You and hear You say, "Well done, good and faithful servant." In the name of Jesus, Amen.

BREAKING BAD HABITS....

Bagel with cream cheese - her favorite! (Dad having breakfast with Misty)

How can you resist those big brown eyes (Mom with Misty)
BREAKING BAD HABITS
We all have them whether we want to admit it or not! During my parents’ month long visit a bad habit was developing for my darling Shih Tzu (Misty). My parents just could not resist sharing their people food with her. Every morning my dad would share his breakfast with her and any other snack he had throughout the day. Boy did she follow him around like a lost puppy!

My parents went back home about two weeks ago, and we are trying to "break the bad habit" of begging. Looking at us with those big brown eyes and practically asking us to share. Whether were snacking while watching a movie or having tea in the livingroom she is always there looking longingly at you as you eat! It is tough saying "no" when she looks at you so cute and innocently. Discipline is not always pleasant but necessary! With perseverance and commitment, we will eventually break this habit.
MY BAD HABIT
This got me thinking about bad habits that we pick up during our life time, and how we need discipline in our own lives to curb such habits. Discipline can be one of the toughest things we deal with but it is for our good. "Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." Hebrews 12:10-11

I have been disciplined by My Heavenly Father many times (actually too many to count), and believe me it has been painful but necessary! One of my recent bad habits that started developing over the past several months, was my obsession with texting. I carried that phone around with me like it was my life source, and we all know what happens when "things" start taking more of our time than God. I was texting at the grocery store, during dinner, at other events, at lunch with friends, the list goes on and worst of all I was even texting while driving! Usually waited until I was stopped at a red light, but we all know how distracting texting and cell phone use can be especially when it is the person in the car ahead of you.
Loving comments were being made by my family and friends, but I chose to ignore it thinking what is the harm in staying connected with all these people most times it was a prayer request and wouldn’t God want me to be there to encourage them! Unfortunately, it was affecting my family and friends and therefore needed to be addressed. God impressed upon me during our Week of Prayer at Calvary that the fast I needed to do had to do with my cell phone! That’s right a "cell phone fast".

Our prayer guide for the week of January 5-10th stated "Fasting is the voluntary and deliberate abstinence from food or any activity for the purpose of concentrated prayer. ... Fasting allows us to come to know God more intimately through increased time in his Word and through meditation whereby we see the release of His kingdom purposes".
THE ROAD TO FORGIVENESS
That was it, I need to deliberately free myself from the control that the cell phone was having in my life - can any of you relate. There was such freedom that came when I shut it off and put it away so that I could be available to God and my family. I repented and asked for forgiveness knowing that not only did it take time away from God but it also had taken time from my family. They needed all of me to be there 100% engaging them with all that I have and all that I am. The same thing with God, when we enter into His Presence he wants 100% of us wholeheartedly ready to do His Will and serve Him with all that we are and all that we have!

I have incorporated my cell phone/texting fast into my daily routine and have made it a habit to turn off my cell phone when I am at home with my family in the evening or when I am praying or studying God’s Word. Also, during the day when I am with a friend or at a public place my cell phone is put away so that it does not become a distraction and take away from the moment I am in. I have learned that we have many moments in life why not make sure we are in them 100%!

MY PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your discipline! Although it is tough to go through it, I know it is necessary. You are my source of strength, and I want to shine for You! Polish me so that the image of Your Son is reflected in my life. I love you and want my life to Glorify You so that those I come into contact with will come to know You! In the name of My Jesus, Amen.

As for me and my blog, we will serve the Lord

Wanted to set the tone for this blog and use it to Glorify my Heavenly Father. I acknowledge Him as my Lord and Savior and believe that we need to serve Him with all that we are and all that we have. So, as for me and my blog - we will serve the Lord!

Many times we come across a message, conversation, quote, etc. that really impacts us profoundly! One of those quotes for me is "Live in such a way that those who know you but don't know God will come to know God because they know you." I read this at least 8 years ago now when I found it in a book entitled "Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul". It became my mission and as I reflected on what that meant to me I focused on the life of Jesus. In Mark 12, Jesus is asked "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: ... Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these."

Love is the foundation and it brings light into any situation! 1 John 4:7-12 "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us."

Let me challenge you to find ways to love one another! It is easy to love your family and friends (most times) but the challenge is to love those you do not know or even those who do not love you!

Try some Random Acts of Love (RAOL). Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Buy the person behind you at the Starbucks his/her morning coffee,
  • shovel a neighbor's driveway,
  • open the door for someone,
  • pay for someone's lunch,
  • send an encouragement card to your pastor and thank him for his heart to serve,
  • compliment someone you don't know
  • write a note to someone you haven't talked to in awhile

The list is endless! You can ask God to reveal to you people He may want you to love on! He wants to show His love so let's give Him the opportunity to use us to reach out to a lost and hurting world!

Remember "let your light shine"!
